Q&A from Artists

Why did I choose the calligraphy industry?

Because of love! If the person loves the perfect combination with the work the person is doing, it is veryhappy. So I feel very happy in the calligraphy industry. There are many kindsof happiness. I feel that as long as I can make myself happy and satisfied, nomatter what industry I am engaged in, I will be happy.

Why do I like calligraphy?

Few people can tell why they likethis or that. They like something that is just pure feeling.  If you want to find the reason, you can onlysay that at some point in life, at a certain opportunity, the good feeling ofthe thing matched to you , and then you like it. When I was a child, I liked towrite and paint. I remember that there was a calligraphy class in elementaryschool. The time was short. I had a class every week. I like it very much. Ilook forward to this class every week. I think it is very interesting to use abrush to describe the shape of some strokes. Sometimes it is not good, it isvery frustrating; sometimes it is done, and the teacher's praise is very happy.Unfortunately, such a calligraphy class stopped after a semester, but myinterest has not stopped. I have planted a calligraphy seed in my heart, and Ihope that one day she will take root. As it turned out, she really sprouted andgrew very flourishing.

When did I startwriting calligraphy?

Strictly speaking, when I was in middle school, when I was in some boring courses, I secretly practiced writingin the classroom. I wrote on the books, on the exercise books, on the walls, and on the doors. Because of this hobby and specialty, the teacher simply arranged for me to write a blackboard for the class. At that time, I had a strong sense of aesthetics and wanted to write the words more beautifully. This is the initiative to explore the beautyof writing, writing calligraphy, should start from this time! Of course, thereal study of calligraphy is still a few years later.

Where have you heldexhibitions in China?

There have been no personal exhibitions yet, and I think that my work will always be better in the future. The work participated in the Shenzhen Guanlan Art Museum Ink and Five Colors a joint exhibition of fiveartists. In addition, individual works have participated in many invitationalexhibitions and comprehensive exhibitions. The most special thing is that whenI was holding a wedding, my wife and I held a wedding exhibition for newlyweds.Yes, my wife is also a calligrapher. We came together because of calligraphy. At our upcoming wedding, we envision whether we wanted to hold a calligraphyexhibition at the same time to make our wedding different. It was very busy toorganize weddings and created works at the same time. We had created a total of50 works for exhibition, and our relatives and friends were very happy.

Does the newspaperhave a website?

There is no website in the newspaper, only the WeChat public platform,WeChat is very convenient, welcome to give attention!

I am influenced by what members or things in the family, so I likecalligraphy and work in this industry?

As I said before, formalprofessional calligraphy learning will take several years. I started learningcalligraphy when I followed my uncle at the age of 17. He is the most famouscalligrapher in the city. He was very strict with me and I must completed thetraining tasks every day. There were no conditions to talk about. I rememberthat the hardest part of learning was in the winter, when there was no heating, standing at the desk and writing about 60 minutes, and the feet were reallycold, so I put down the brush and went out to do running. When the feet ranhot, I went back to the desk and continued writing. Repeatedly, I insist oncompleting daily training tasks. I still love calligraphy and didn't back down. After many years, I have benefited from the hard training of those years andlaid a solid foundation for me. Later, I went to college, and all the coursesrelated to calligraphy were completed in advance, and the teacher could notbelieve it. In the university, I participated in the calligraphy society andorganized calligraphy activities. At that time, I thought that if there is sucha calligraphy profession, it would be great to have a calligraphy class everyday! I decided to apply for a master's degree in calligraphy. After two yearsof hard work, I was admitted to Capital Normal University. As far as I know, there were more than 200 people who had applied for this major in the country, and only 7 people has been accepted at the end. I was one of the lucky ones. After studying this major, I finally succeeded in dreaming. I think, I willnever be separated from calligraphy.

Personal Hobby?

I have too many hobbies , like : Pottery, playing the piano, singing, dancing, photography, etc., all I want to do it.However, the biggest hobby is calligraphy. The time and energy invested are themost. It is a day and night thinking.

A little story aboutcalligraphy that happened to me?

When the professor instructed meto study, he said that my character should be more "warping". At thattime, I heard the meaning of “pretty” because of the same pronunciation andwent back to think seriously for three months. Then I was pleased to report tothe professor that I finally realized the meaning of "warping". Theprofessor said to me with a glance, its warping and not pretty! This matter had become the opposite exapmle of other students.

When I comment on other people'sworks, I talk about the internal movement of line writing. For example, if achild who has not received training can write such a line with a brush, itmeans that the line of his work is unqualified. There is no technical content. As a result, the author was very angry. He thought that I devalued him anddescribed him as a child who had not received training. Although it is amisunderstanding, it is always bad to be unpleasant. Its like that talking too much will make mistakes, and some unfortunatethings come from the bad words were used!

Someone sincerely praised my work:Teacher Xu, your work is really good, just like the one printed on thecomputer. I don’t know should I laugh or cry. The first rule of calligraphycreation is not to write rules and changes like the practical Chinesecharacters printed by computers. But ordinary people do not understand thedifference between practical Chinese characters and artistic creation. Theythink that it is very remarkable to be able to do handwriting as good as  a computer’s printing works.

A calligrapher did not pay attentionto his gender when he first met. The impression seemed to be a woman with longhair. When we met for the second time, we went to the bathroom. The artist justentered the men's bathroom with me. I cautioned that you should go to thewomen's bathroom. As a result, he told me very seriously: I am a boy!

Concentration on learning, I did notpay attention on the news. When I met with my friends one day, I suddenly heardthat the Korean capital became Seoul. I was shocked. I thought that the Koreancapital had moved to the capital and attracted friends to laugh. The capital ofSouth Korea was renamed Seoul a year ago. Unfortunately, I was the last one toknow.
